(G8-12) VEX Metal V5 Robotics Foundation
VEX V5 is a robotics platform designed for educational use, featuring a metal-based construction system with bolt-together parts, a programmable "V5 Brain" control unit, a dedicated controller for wireless operation, and smart motors that allow students to build and program robots with varying levels of complexity, ideal for learning STEM concepts through hands-on robotics projects; it provides flexibility for both novice and experienced users to design and build custom mechanisms while offering real-time feedback through the controller and brain interface.
A few things about VEX V5 that differentiate from VEX IQ:
-
Modular design: Metal parts easily connect with bolts, enabling custom robot builds.
-
V5 Brain: The central processing unit with a touchscreen display for programming and monitoring robot status.
-
V5 Controller: Wireless device for user input and real-time feedback from the robot.
-
Smart Motors: Motors with built-in encoders that provide feedback on position and speed.
-
Programming: Utilizes a user-friendly coding environment to program robot movements and sensor interactions.
-
Educational focus: Designed to teach STEM principles through hands-on robotics experiences.
Robo Rally
Use proportional reasoning and scale to design a race course for the Speedbot with mathematical reasoning, proportional reasoning and iterative design.
MedBot
Program a robot to deliver medication to patients on a hospital floor that they create. Students will learn how to program the Speedbot to drive forward, in reverse, turn left, and turn right.
Loop, There It Is!
Complete several mini-challenges to experiment with using loops within their projects. This information will be used later in the “Groove Machine Challenge”.
Clawbot with Controller
Program the Controller to maneuver the Clawbot. They will analyze different ways to program the Controller by running different example projects such as Tank Drive and Clawbot Control.
Momentum Alley
Program a robot to knock down bowling pins (cans or water bottles) using momentum. Students will explore how to program at different velocities.
It's a Draw!
Explore the VEX V5 Clawbot and try using it as an artistic tool in a drawing game.
Vision Sensor
Explore a program that processes how the Vision Sensor input data should affect the Clawbot's behavior.
Team Freeze Tag
Build the TrainingBot and learn to how to drive it, and use the Bumper Switch and print to the Brain Screen to engage in a classroom competition of Team Freeze Tag!
Speedy Delivery
Navigate a warehouse by programming the Claw and Arm of a Clawbot to grab and move packages to a loading dock for delivery.
To Do, or Not to Do
Explore conditional statements and how sensors can serve as the input deciding if the conditional is true.
